Abstract: | Preservation and long-term storage of Red Blood Cells (RBCs) is need to ensure a readily available, safe blood supply for transfusion medicine. During storage, in fact, preserved blood cells undergo progressive structural and functional changes that may reduce red cell function and viability after transfusion. This was prospective cross sectional and hospital based study to assess the effect of storage on some hematological parameters (RBCs count .HCT level and RDW-CV) of CPDA whole blood in blood bank. Blood bags (450 ml) was drawn from 60 healthy volunteer donors into CPDA-1 anticoagulant and placed on the quarantine shelf of the blood bank refrigerator maintained at 2-6°C. Blood bags were screened for HCV, HBsAg, Syphilis and HIV 1&2 and were confirmed negative. Samples were collected at 0, 9, 18, 27 &36 days and tested for hematological parameters using full automated hematology analyzer Mindray (BC 3000plus) for measuring its value. Data was analyzed using SPSS program (version 22). Comparison of day 0 versus day 9 revealed that the RBCs were slightly decreased from 4.62× 1012/L on day 0 to 4.61× 1012/L on day9 (p=0.000), when in day 18,27, &36 was (4.62,4.62&4.61) respectively. The mean of hematocrit in day zero was (42.3%), while in day 9 was (42.7%), in day 18 was (42.1%) then increased to (43.1%) in day 27 and in day 36 to (43.3%) and The mean of red cell distribution width in day zero was (13.4 %), while in day 9 was (13.5 %), in day 18 was (14.2 %) then increased to (14.4 %) in day 27 and in day 36 increased to (14.6 %),(p=0.000). The study was concluded that there was insignificant variation in RBCs and HCT values during storage, while there was significant variation RDW –CV |
