Serodetection of Hepatitis B Virus among Beauty Salons Working Ladies in Khartoum State

Abstract

Blood-borne viruses such as hepatitis B have some common epidemiological characteristics, and have infected millions of people throughout the world. Lady’s beauty salon workers deal with sharp equipment all of the time with a wide variety of clients leading them at a greater risk of expose to hepatitis B and other blood born viruses.

This study aim to determine the serodetection of hepatitis B virus and to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice among lady’s beauty salons workers in Khartoum State.

This was analytical cross sectional work-place study conducted from March to August 2022. A structured pre-tested questionnaire was used to collected demographic and clinical data. Enzyme Linked Immunoassay (ELISA) was done to detect the presence of HBsAg. Generated data were analyzed using SPSS.

Ninety one (91) lady’s beauty salons workers were enrolled in this study. 41 (45.1%) were single and 50 (54.9%) were married. 30 (33%) completed the primary school, 38 (41.8%) completed the secondary level and 23 (25.3%) were graduated. The work duration vary from 1- 10 years, and 62 (68.1%) have duration work more than 8 years represent. HBsAg was detected in 9 (9.9%). The HBsAg positive rates were p.value higher in the age group of participants between 26 - 30 years. In expressing their knowledge on Hepatitis B and C, about 80% know about hepatitis B and C, but the majority of group 72% do not know about the mode of transmission, and only about 3% of the respondents reported little knowledge of the signs and symptoms of hepatitis B.

High frequency of HBV was found among lady’s beauty salons and low knowledge of sign and symptoms, mode of transmission. Our study is showed that the low source of information about HBs virus. For protection, the lady’s beauty salons workers needed to be educated about viral hepatitis and other infectious diseases.
