In the view of the higher incidence of cardiovascular complications caused by accelerated atherosclerosis which is the main cause of mortality in dialysis patients, and as the hyperlipidaemia that frequently occur in these patients is the major cause of these complications, this study was conducted to essentially study the effect of Heamodialysis process on plasma cholesterol level and evaluation of urea, creatinine and electrolytes after dialysis. Ninety –four renal failure patients, who were on conservative Heamodialysis in Renal Unit of Ibn Sina Hospital during the period from April to September 2010, were selected, they were 62 males and 32 females, their ages ranged between 15-80 years, the mean value of 45.5. A sample of blood was taken before the dialysis process and another sample was taken after the dialysis process. Serum cholesterol was determined by enzymatic method, urea by urease, creatinine by jaffe reaction, electrolytes by flame photometer in addition to blood pressure pre and post-dialysis. The mean total cholesterol concentration pre-dialysis was 130.80mg/dl while that post- dialysis was 148.36mg/dl with a significant differences between the two means. Most of the patients (88.3%) under study have increased values of total cholesterol after the dialysis process than that pre-dialysis process. Where as 11.7% there total cholesterol level decreased after the Heamodialysis process. The two means of cholesterol level were within the normal range, but there was 18.1% have high levels of total cholesterol concentration (>200mg/dl). The mean value of urea test was found to be 140±12.2mg/ dl , creatinine mean value was 5.4 ±0.2mg/dl, sodium mean value was 135±15mg/dl, potassium mean value was 4.5±0.1mg/dl and calcium mean value was 8.0±0.8 mg/dl .en_US
