dc.description.abstractA descriptive cross- sectional study was carried in Port Sudan city in its three sectors which included eight districts during February to June 2011.The study was conducted to determine the type of existing mosquitoes and their distribution in Port Sudan city. 500 samples of mosquitoes were collected; adults were collected from rooms in houses and larvae from Zeirs, generator water tank, marshes and leakage water. Some of the larvae were placed in cages to complete their life cycle and reach the adult stage for further identification. The result revealed that the three genera of mosquitoes found in the city were Culex ( 60.2%), Aedes (33.2%) and Anopheles (6.6%.) .The species encountered in the city were Cx. quinquefasciatus (46%), Cx. sitiens(14.2%), Ae. aegypti (33.2%) and An. funestus (6.6%). Also, the study revealed that in the eastern sector, only Cx. quinquefasciatus (16.6%) and Ae. aegypti (13%) were found. The middle sector has the high rate of An. funestus (5%) and Cx. sitiens (14.2%), but Cx. quinquefasciatus and Ae. aegypyi constituted 9.4% and ‫‪11.8% respectively. In the southern sector, An. funestus represented‬‬ ‫‪1.6%, Cx. quinquefasciatus (20%) and Ae. aegypti (8.4%). When the‬‬ ‫‪mosquitoes were classified according to gender, Cx. quinquefasciatus‬‬ ‫‪males constituted 60.4% while the females constituted 39.6% of the total‬‬ ‫‪collection. For Cx. sitiens, the males and females constituted 70.4% and‬‬ ‫‪29.2% respectively. Ae. aegypyi males constituted 39.1%, while the‬‬ ‫,‪females represented the highest rate collected (60.9%). For An. funestus‬‬,the ‫males constituted 42.4% while the females constituted‬‬ 57.6%en_US
