Measurement of Some Hematological Parameters of Umbilical Cord Blood of Newborns in Khartoum Teaching Hospital

Abstract

This cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study which is carried out in Khartoum Teaching Hospital to identify the values of some hematological parameters of cord blood. Hundred cord blood samples were collected in Khartoum Teaching Hospital by experienced mid wives. Cord blood samples were collected at the time of the delivery (normal vaginal deliveries), three millimeter of blood was drained into the sterile container containing K2EDTA.sex and health conditions of the infant and mother were written in questionnaire. The study revealed that mean + SD value of Hemoglobin concentration was 14.5+ 1.7mg/dl, hematocrit was 44.5+ 5.6%, MCV was 103 +7.6fl , MCH 33.5 +2.8pg , MCH C 32.3+1.4% respectively. The study revealed that the mean values for red cell count was (4.3 + 0.7) ×1012/l, cord blood nucleated red blood cells (nRBCs) count (0.5+1.1)/100WBC. Total leukocyte count with mean of (11.8+ 4.8) ×109/l, the white blood cell differential count revealed that mean + SD of neutrophil was 43.9+11.2% and lymphocytes was 51.1+10.8% respectively. The mean values of platelet count in study group was (230+62.7)× 109/l, reticulocyte count in this study showed that mean reticulocyte count 3.7+1.2. However no significant difference was found between gender of Neonate and the mean values of some hematological parameters of cord blood.
