Critical Factors Affecting the Performance of the Construction Industry in Sudan

Abstract

The construction process is a creative process that utilizes six main sources to construct a unique building. These sources include the materials, machinery, manpower, engineering technology, capital funds and construction management. In spite of the great role of the construction industry in the development of the country but it exposed to some factors during their various phases which affected the performance of this industry and its contribution in develop the country in economic social and cultural side This research aims to study and explore the construction industry in Sudan to shed light on the factors that affect the performance and challenges that face it and examine them with all the concerned parties in order to find solutions that would improve its existing performance In order to achieve this objective, it was important to adopt special approach (descriptive analysis method) then designing a questionnaire and conduct interviews with a group of concerned parties in order to explore the factors that affect the construction industry performance in Sudan this factors were classified in ten groups according to the nature of these factors and their effect This required filling the research questionnaire to evaluate the impact of such factor and to analyze the relevant information so as to reach sound results. Through the results of the analysis extracted by the program used statistical analysis (SPSS) Analysis of collected data showed that the most important factors that has deep impact on construction industry performance is the fluctuation of foreign currency exchange rate Lack of allocating appropriate funds for the project implementation prior submission of the tender proposal, inability of the contractor and contractor team to deal with the implementation of the project, inadequate skills and training of the manpower involved with project implementation. Based on these results, the researcher proposed some solutions to improve the existing situation of the construction industry to avoid the negative v impact of such problems and to assist in performance improvement of the construction industry in Sudan
