Abstract: This study was designed to investigate the major flavonoids of two medicinal plants: CordiasenensisandAcacia oerfotawhich are widely used in Sudanesetraditional medicine. The bark of Cordiasenensis was extracted with aqueous ethanol and the crude product was screened for secondary metabolites. Resultsshowed the presence of:flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids and sterols. Test for saponins was negative. The crude extracts of Cordiasenensisand Acacia oerofotawere fractionated by different chromatographic techniques. After the usual workup compound I was isolated from Cordiasenensis, while compounds II and III were isolated from Acacia oerfota. Compound I II iv O O OCH3 HO CH3 O OCH3 O OH CH3 OCH3 OCH3 HO O CCH3 Compound III In cup plate diffusion bioassay, different concentrations of total extract of Acacia oerofotaexhibited different antimicrobial responses against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, with zones of inhibition ranging from 6 to 13mm. In addition, the extractshowed good activity against B. subtilis, P. aeruginosa and E. coli with zones of inhibition of 13, 13 and 12 mm, respectively with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) 62.5, 125 and 125 μg, respectively. However it showed moderate inhibitory activity against the Gram positive bacterial pathogen S. aureus with zone of inhibition 9 mm.
