Abstract: This was a descriptive cross sectional study carried out in Ribat teaching hospital - Khartoum state - Sudan from January to April 2017, which aimed to estimate of normal main portal vein diameter using Ultrasonography. There were one hundred cases of age ranged from seven to seventy four years, all cases had normal liver, any patient had age eighty years old or had any hepatic and portal vein disorder was excluded from this study. Transabdominal scanning was done for all cases using Siemens with curvilinear probe of 2 to 3.5 Megahertz (MHz). Data collected using special data collection sheet designed to evaluate geneder age, weight, height and Portal vein. For analyzing of collected data study used Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Study resulted that mean of age for cases under study was 29.9 years with stander deviation 15.9 years, while the mean of weight 59.6 kilograms (Kgs) with stander deviation 13.3 (Kgs), mean of height 1.65 meter with stander deviation 0.13 meter, while mean portal vein diameter 0.98 centimeter with stander deviation 0.01 centimeter. Study concluded that there was a weak correlation between portal vein diameter with age and height of cases, while there was strong correlation between portal vein diameter with weight The study also concluded that there was no significance correlation between portal vein diameter with gender. Study recommended that further studies should be done with increased number of sample and introduced other age groups.
