Investigating Vocabulary Difficulties in Reading Comprehension A Case Study of Grade Three Secondary School Students in some Schools in Khartoum Locality

Abstract

This study aims to find out the errors encountered by Sudanese students at grade three secondary schools while using vocabulary; and analyzing it trying to find some solutions for them. To collect data for this study, the researcher has followed the descriptive and the analytic method. The researcher has designed a test to 100 students (Boys/Girls) at grade three Sudanese Secondary Schools, Khartoum Locality. The results of the study are as follow: - The students have difficulty when they use vocabulary. - The students do not know the parts of speech, so they misuse the suffixes. - The students do not know the meaning of the prefixes. - The students do not know the spelling rules. To collect data for this study, the researcher followed the descriptive method and the analytic method so he made a vocabulary test for 100 students (male and female) at grade three at Sudanese secondary schools, Khartoum Locality. The results of the study were as the following: - Students do not know well how to use suffixes. - Students do not know how to deal with prefixes. - Students do not know well how deal with spelling rules. According to the results above, the researcher recommends the following:

- Students should be taught the rules of the Prefixes and Suffixes. - Spelling rules should be taught. - Dictation should be tested.
