Abstract: | This essay aims at studying the theme of marriage in the novel "La Mare au diable" by "George Sand" . German is widower, he was forced by the father Maurice, the father of German's wife who is dead and the lord of the family, to marry a mature woman in order to take care of his children and keep his house. The essay tries to find out if a young woman can keep the house of the widower and take care of his children? To fulfill this study, the researcher follows the analytic method. The researcher, first, talks about the author's life, and then he gives a summary of the plot of the novel. Then the researcher discusses the father Maurice attitude towards the marriage, German's looks for the suggested wife by the father Maurice. The researcher discusses the social obstacles of the widower's marriage, also the women and the housekeeping. Finally the researcher discusses German's reasons of choosing little Mary and how he marries her. The researcher, through the German's marriage to the little Marry, finds out that, the young woman is able to keep the house of her widower husband, and she can take care of his children. |
