Abstract: | This study is a case-control study, conducted during the period from March to September 2012 in Khartoum state in Soba hospital. Fifty Sudanese patients with hypothyroidism and forty healthy controls were involved in this study. This study done to determine the plasma lipids profile (total cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) and high density lipoprotein (HDL-c) in Sudanese patient with hypothyroidism in comparison to apparently health volunteers. The plasma levels of lipid profiles were measured by using Cobas integra 400 plus chemistry analyzer and commercial kits from Roche Company. The results of this study showed the means of the plasma levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL –c of the test group were significantly increased when compared to control group (p = 0.000), and the mean of the plasma levels of HDL-c of the test group were significantly decreased when compared to control group (p = 0.000). The study showed moderate positive correlation between the duration of the disease and plasma total cholesterol(r = 0.52), and also with plasma LDL-c of the test group(r = 0.61) and weak positive correlation with triglycerides(r=0.15). There was a negative correlation between the duration of the disease and HDL-c in test group (r = - 0.20). From this study, it is concluded that there are significantly increase in the plasma levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL-c, and significant decrease in HDL-c in Sudanese patients with hypothyroidism. |
