Abstract: The “Les Miserables” by Victor Hugo is one of the master pieces of novels. It deals with the social and judicial injustice from which poor people suffer. The research focused on the character of Jean Val Jean. His role is principal, he is the spokesman of the writer who revealed through Jean Val Jean his ideas and concepts. The development of his character passed through three phases: one was natural or neutral, the other was negative and the last was positive. There were internal and external factors which resulted in these phases and changes. -The natural phase was at the beginning of Jean Val Jean’s life. - He started as a simple worker fighting to earn his living for himself and the children of his sister who took care of him. -At that time he had a natural and neutral feeling towards the society. One day he committed a little crime. He tried to steal some bread for his sister’s children. But he paid much (19 years in prison) After he had been set free the society refused to accept him so hatred filled his heart and he became a real monster. - Then he met the priest Mr. Myriel who treated him as a respectful human being. - The result was magical he became a good man useful for his society and this is a message of the author. He wants to indicate preach the importance of the religion in changing the behavior of people. Our methodology in this research was based on analysis for the deeds and the sayings of the characters.
