The problem of improving the voltage profile and reducing power losses in electrical networks is a task that must be solved in an optimal manner. Therefore, placement of FACTS devices in suitable location to control the line flow and maintain bus voltages in a desired level and reduce losses is required. The unified power flow controller (UPFC) is able to control, concurrently or selectively, all transmission line parameters, voltage, impedance, and angle. The overall aim of the research is to enhance the voltage profile and reduce power losses in Sudanese electrical network, this thesis presents one of the voltage stability indices i.e. a line stability index 𝐿𝑚𝑛 which is used to seek the optimal location of FACTS devices in a power system. Proposed algorithm is applied on Sudanese electrical network for optimally installing multi UPFC devices in the system. Optimal power flow (OPF) has been utilized to set the power flow parameters for the UPFC. Seven UPFC devices are optimally installed in the system, the overall voltage profile is improved and confined within ±5% and total active and reactive losses of the system have been decreased by 6.96% and 0.74% of the base case, respectively. Results are obtained using NEPLAN software.en_US
