Altered platelet morphology and function had been reported in diabetic patients which associated with vascular events. This study aimed to determine the relationship between diabetes and platelet activity as measured by mean platelet volume This analytical case- control study was included 82 samples that were collected from type 2 diabetic pateints, 50 samples collected from healthy individuals as control. These samples were collected from patients attending sharg Alneel Hospital from February to May 2014. Blood samples were tested for platelet count, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width as measured by sysmex Kx-21, glucose level and glycosylated hemoglobin as measured by cobas. This study revealed that the mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width were significant higher(p_value0.00, 0.02 respectively) in diabetic(9.7±.96fl,12.4±1.9fl respectively) comparep to non diabetic(9.3±.64fl,11.8±1.1fl respectively). Platelet count was significant lower (p-value 0.01) in diabetic (248±67.7X10^9C\L) compare to non diabetic (272±44.9X10^9C\L) There were insignificant difference (p-value 0.15) in mean platelet volume among diabetic on oral hypoglycemic agent, insulin and combination therapy (10±.99fl,9.7±.63fl and9.4±.99fl respectively). There were insignificant difference (p-value 0.23) in mean platelet volume between fasting plasma glucose level that equal or less than 126mg\dl (10.0±.91fl) and more than 126mg\dl(9.8±.99). There were insignificant difference (p-value 0.07) in mean platelet volume between hemoglobin A1c that equal or less than 6.5%(10.3±1.1%) and more than 6.5%(9.8±.9%) No correlation was observed between mean platelet volume and duration of diabetes(p_value0.28,r-.12). This study concluded that MPV, PDW were significant higher in diabetic compare to non diabetic, platelet count was significant lower in diabetic compare to non diabetic, MPV were not affected by FBG, Hb A1c and no correlation between MPV and duration of diabetes.en_US
