dc.description.abstractBack ground: Smoking is increasing habit between men; it is known that smoking can cause dangerous diseases such as cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis events. Study was designed as case control study and was performed in Khartoum state during the period from November to May 2014. Aim of study: the aim of this study is to assess the plasma total and free prostate specific antigen among Sudanese smokers in Khartoum state. Material and methods: One hundred blood sample were collected from two group(50 smokers as case and 50 from non smokers as control group ). Plasma total and free prostate specific antigen were measured by ELISA. Results: were express as (Mean±SD) as follow: plasma total prostate specific antigen in smokers was (2.36 ng/ml ±2.73) and in non smokers was (0.82 ng/ml ±1.7) and p value (p≤0.01). Free prostate specific antigen in smokers (0.70 ng/ml ±0.94 and in non smokers was (0.15 ng/ml ±0.37) and p value was (p≤0.01). The study showed significant increase in total and free prostate specific antigen levels in healthy heavy smokers when compared with control. The study also revealed significant correlation between smoking and both number of cigarette smoked per day and duration of smoking. Conclusion: The total prostate specific antigen and free prostate specific antigen are significantly increased in healthy heavy smokers when compared with non smokers.en_US
