Pomegranate Rind Extract As Antimicrobial Agent Aganist Salmonella and Shigella Bacteria

Abstract

The pomegranate, Punica granatum ., is an ancient, unique fruit borne on a small, long-living tree cultivated throughout the Mediterranean region. Pomegranate is used in several systems of medicine for a variety of ailments. P. garantum, have been reported to have antimicrobial activity against a range of Gram positive and negative bacteria. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of methanolic extract of Punica granatum rind (MEPGR) against Slamonella and Shigella bacteria. In this study, the mentioned organisms were cultured in Mueller-Hinton media and then added MPRE at concentrations of 100%, 50% and 25% were inserted on medias. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated by agar well diffusion method. All concentrations of MPRE had antibacterial activity against Salmonella, but only at concentration of 100% and 50% MPRE was had activity against Shigella. Photochemical studies were done to determine the type of compounds responsible for the antibacterial effect of pomegranate using GC_MS apparatus.
