Abstract:
With the rapid growth of cellular phone systems and amazing various services that is provided, cellular phone positioning has a great effect in these types of services. Emergency, safety, personal navigation, billing, commercial services, enquiry and information are some of these services and not to forget entertainment services. Positioning may also be used for network optimization; as the result beneficiaries are end users (Mobile Station (MS) users) as well as network operators.
The objective of this thesis is to provide a positioning method that can estimate the position of any types of MS; without a need to replace or add any device to MS. In order to obtain an accurate position, measurement of single parameter from multiple Base Stations (BSs) or multiple parameters from single BS is required. By using a hybrid TOA/AOA (time of arrival/ angle of arrival) measurements a MS position can be estimated from single BS. In order to solve the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) problem that exist in cellular system environment a BS with array antenna and Joint Angle and Delay Estimation (JADE) algorithm are being used. The JADE is jointly estimating TOA and AOA, and then the effect of NLOS is mitigated by selecting earliest signal.
A mean error and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of TOA, AOA, Distance, and MS positioning is calculated by using MATLAB and found that the errors increase as the distance of MS increase, beside that JADE algorithm has a good performance in positioning estimation.
