<summary type="text">Rheologyical Properties Evaluation of Sudanese Bentonite with Different Additives

This study was carried out to assess the rheological properties and filtration loss for a drilling fluid prepared from local bentonite. Required data and sampleswere carfelluy gathered from the study area(Al-fao area) in accord of approved sampling procesdures. Mineralogical, physical, chemical tests were carried out to assess quality of local bentonite. Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC), polyanionic cellulose polymer(PAC-LV), and sodium carbonate(Na2CO3)wereused to increase viscosity and to decrease filtration losses. The results have shown that the local bentonite can satisfy the American Petroluem Institute (API) specifications for different concentrations of CMC and PAC-LV. Adition of 10% CMC concentration for the selected local bentonite, inhances rheological properties, filter loss and yield point as related to plastic viscosity ratio became within the range of API specifications.

Kassala Town is frequently inundated by the Gash River. The flood of 2003 caused great damages and extensive losses of lives, resulting in an estimated loss of 575 million U.S.Dollars.The main objective of this study is the appraisal of the existing protection and training structure, and quantifying the sediment transported by the Gash River. It is found that the Gash River transports 15 million tons (40 million cubic meters) of sediment annually passing downstream Kassala Town. The appraisal revealed that although the adopted spur and dike system was and still is the ideal approach to train the Gash River and protect Kassala Town, yet the undesired man activities coupled with absence of maintenance were the main causes of inundations. In 1984, the bed of the Gash River near Kassala Town was 10 centimeter below the general ground level of Kassala Town. After 1984 the practiced undesired activities raised the bed of the Gash River two meters higher than Kassala Town general land level. It is recommended to enforce a law prohibiting these undesired activities as well as rehabilitation of the existing spur dike system

<summary type="text">Effect of Chromium on the Survival of Heterotrophic Bacteria in Waste Stabilization Ponds

Based on experimental work, the effect of pH on heterotrophic bacteria enumeration was studied in batch cultures tests conducted under different chromium concentrations. Samples were collected from the effluent of the primary facultative pond of the University of Dar es Salam (Tanzania) waste stabilization ponds system. The enumeration of heterotrophic bacteria was investigated at different pH values. The density of bacteria was higher at pH 7 than any other pH values for all concentrations. At this pH, the number varied between 1,450,000 to 280,000 at 12 and 108 hours after addition of 5 mg/l chromium concentration. In case of 50 mg/l and pH 7 the number reduced dramatically to 98 to 0 at 12 and 108 hours respectively. It was observed that, the pH of 11 was significantly detrimental to the heterotrophic bacteria. The number ranged between 4000 to 500 in case of 5 mg/l after 12 and 108 hours. Only 13 heterotrophic bacteria were counted after 12 hours when 50 mg/l of chromium concentration was added.
