dc.description.abstract This study represents a critical look at the teaching of English alphabet in Sudan through SPINE (pupil’s book 1 and teacher’s book1). It was conducted with the aim of checking the method followed by the SPINE in teaching English alphabet, in terms of teaching reading and writing English alphabet. The study also aimed to find out to what extent the teachers at Basic level schools were qualified and trained to teach English alphabet. To achieve this, four hypotheses were set for this study, to check whether these hypotheses could be confirmed or not, a teacher’s questionnaire was structured by the researcher for data collection. The study sample of this research consisted of 80 English language teachers from Khartoum State, particularly those who teach English alphabet at Basic Level School. They were randomly chosen. The results of data analysis have shown that the four hypotheses are confirmed. The analysis of the collected data has revealed that the Spine pupil’s book 1 and teacher’s book 1 do not follow an appropriate method in teaching English alphabet for beginners. It has also revealed that the majority of the English language teachers at Basic level schools, particularly those who teach English alphabet are not trained and adequately trained to teach English alphabet. In addition to that the SPINE current teacher’s book 1 doesn’t provide adequate help for teachers in teaching English alphabet. Therefore recommendations for further studies have been made. en_US
