dc.description.abstract The study aims at describing that conception as it exists with the French language students, and its effect on the academic performance of the student. Also, the study aims at explaining the strategies that the language student can use as effective means in order to improve his academic performance and develop his linguistic competences. The researcher adopted the analytical and statistical approach using a test for the fourth year students of Sudan University of Science and Technology, College of languages, Department of French. The information is statistically analyzed; the study came up with the following results: -the preconception about French language effects student study negatively or positively. -social, materialistic and other factors have an impact of this attitude is clearly visible in their concept about French. -association of existing attitude of student toward French with the psychological and cognitive side, as the study confirms the association of the motives and desire together with his awareness and clarity of objectives all determine the correct attitude leading to success or the opposite. -the study found that most students are compelled to study French as other fields which they like are unattainable. This had a negative impact when they study French. They consider it as imposed on them and they only want to get a university certificate (degree) and not as a means of communication and necessary for culture to promote individuals socially. en_US
