This is an analytical descriptive study which carried out in the City of Khartoum at
Fedail Hospital in the period from June 2013 to October 2013 to measure the
fibrinogen level, platelets count and the mean platelet volume on the diabetic
patient with retinopathy. 50 diabetic patients were selected,50 diabetic patients
with retinopathy and 50 non diabetic as control group.5 ml of venous blood was
drawn from each patient and was divided into 2.5 ml in a Trisodum citrate
container then centrifuged to get the platelet poor citrated plasma to measure the
fibrinogen level. Stogo coagulation analyzer used to measure the fibrinogen level
.The remaining 2.5 ml in EDTA container to measure the platelet count and the
mean platelet volume, Sysmex KX21 auto analyzer used to measure the platelet
count and the mean platelet volume. The results were obtained and the mean of
each parameter was calculated they were as followed: For diabetic patients
Fibrinogen level: 300 mg/dl, compared to 371mg/dl for diabetic patients with
retinopathy and 278mg/dl for the control group. Platelet count for diabetic patients:
282.000/ml, compared to 237.000/ml for diabetic patients with retinopathy and
255.000/ml for the control group. Mean platelet volume for diabetic patients 10.2 fl
, 11.2 for diabetic patients with retinopathy and 10.1 for the control group.
This study showed that there is an increase in the fibrinogen level in patients with
diabetes and retinopathy when compared to the control group , which indicates the
existence of a significant relation between high fibrinogen level and an increased
risk of having retinopathy for patients with diabetes type II. This study also
showed no significant relation between platelet count and the retinopathy, while
there was an increase in the mean platelet volume in patients with retinopathy,
which indicated the existence of a significant relation between mean platelet
volume and diabetic retinopathy. |
