Abstract:
This study was conducted in Khartoum state. Sharq an-Nīl locality, Bahri
locality and Umdurmān locality. It aimed to investigate the main differences
between traditional range management and ranching system.
The methods used for data collection was socio-economic survey for
pastoral communities. Primary data was collected by using questionnaires.
Secondary data was collected from visits , books ,scientific papers and
reports .
Three localities were selected to represent study area. Random samples
were used of respondents according to the size of herders and ranchers in
each localities, which represent 10% of target group, with
questionnaires. 40 respondents from herders and 40
about 80
respondents from
ranchers are engaged .
The result showed that, the main differences between traditional range
management system and ranching system include, the differences in land
tenure , type and time of nutrition , water sources and frequency , veterinary
services and the differences in management activities in each system .
The study suggests application of more modern management technology in
ranches to improve the present traditional range management systems. Also
increase the range management practices which can lead to improve the
vegetation cover as well as
to increase the rangeland production by
reseeding new plant species and determine the rangeland carrying capacity.
