dc.description.abstract VIII Diabetes disease affects the vascular ocular circulation, lens, vitreous, and retinal vessels. The B-Scan allows the visualization of the lens echogencity, vitreal hemorrhage or tears and total retinal detachment. The color Doppler imaging allows the evaluation of the blood flow velocity of the OA and CRA. All subjects had been investigated using B-Scan and color Doppler ultrasonography. This study is a prospective study to evaluate the effect of diabetic disease on the eye lens, vitreous, and retinal blood vessels. Two hundred and twenty four eyes of diabetic patients who visited the retinal clinic in Makka hospital in Khartoum were investigated using B-Scan and Color Doppler. Thirty two eyes of a healthy volumtary controls were recruited from the hospital staff and patients relatives for comparison. All patients were investigated y B-Scan (Tomy machine) with 10.0 MHz high frequency sector transducer, and color Doppler (GE logic 5) with linear transducer (7.0 MHz). For the analysis of this study, t-test, correlation and linear regression were used. The t-test was used to test the difference inIX means on OA (PSV, EDV) and CRA (PSV, EDV) for diabetic patients versus normal controls. The t-test shows a significant difference between the diabetic patients and the controls at p = 0.05. The correlation was used to find the association between age, duration of the disease and the retinal detachment .The results showed that the B-Scan could be used better in visualizing the lens echogenicity, the vitreous and retinal tears or detachment. On color Doppler, the study showed a significant reduction of the CRA velocity (9.7 cm/s P=0.05 ) in diabetic patients compared to the normal controls (12.3 cm/s P=0.05) and a significant increase of the blood velocity of the OA (36.4 cm/s P=0.05) in diabetic patients compared to the normal controls (31.6 cm/s p = 0.05). There was a significant correlation between age , duration of the disease and the PSV of the (OA and the CRA).The age and duration of the disease is directly proportional to the PSV of OA and inversely proportional to PSV of the CRA. This study concluded that the severity of the diabetic disease is correlated with age and duration of the disease and retinopathy. The B-scan and color Doppler proved to be well informative to assess the impact of the diabetic disease on the patient’s eyes. en_US
