dc.description.abstract This research is about the role of ultrasound [US] in the examination & detection of renal cystic & solid masses by scanning with real time U/S, measure the size, the location,& the extend related to the neighboring organs, The use of the Doppler for the blood vessels facilitates the differentiation between neoplastic from the other cystic masses. Materials & Methods: Our population from King Faisal Hospital 300 patients were scanned for suspected renal masses. 67 [22.3 %] patients were positively diagnosed with some sort of renal mass. 37.6% were diagnosed with US only 31.3% with both US initially & then another modality. 31.1% scanned with other radiology as an initial modality, & then US. Results: The detection rates of US is higher in the assessment of cystic masse that it's sensitivity in deticting of solid or the mixed textured masses. The accuracy is more with the the masses bigger than 30 mm. Ultrasound cannot be used to specify or differentiate between the different kinds of tumors or other solid masses, The previous study showed that the US is sufficient in detection of renal masses [2.5cm or more]. The flexibility of US in scanning in different approaches in addition to the cost, the safety from ionization, the use of it as an intraoperative, portable in the intensive care units, & the patients wards . All these reasons make Ultrasound a valuable modality &more recommended for the poor countries. en_US
