dc.description.abstract This study was conducted in Khartoum teaching hospital during the period from May to July 2005. A total of 109 patients (with mean age 36 year, range 5-85 years) were included (50 from urology & 59 from orthopedic units). Specimens (urine and wound swab) were collected from each subject (urine & swab) and processed for isolation of the bacterial cause. The isolated bacteria were identified then subjected to antimicrobial sensitivity test using Kirby-Bauer technique. A total of 87 bacterial isolates were identified in the two units. In urology unit, the most common pathogens were E. coli 18 (51.4%) and Pseudomonas spp 8 (22.9%). In orthopedic unit the most common pathogens were Staphylococcus aeureus 19 (36.5%), E. coli 10 (19.2%), Pseudomonas spp 9 (17.3%) ,Proteus spp 9 (17.3%) and Coliforms were 5 (9.7%) . The antimicrobial susceptibility of the 87 isolates to the commonly used 19 antimicrobial agents were performed using the standard Kirby-Baur method. The isolated organisms in urology unit showed high resistance to Ciprofloxacin, Cefuroxime and Cotrimoxazole. And high susceptiblity to Imepenim & Meropenem. The isolated organisms in orthopedic unit showed high resistance to Gentamicin and high sensitivity to Imipenem & Meropenem. en_US
