dc.description.abstract This is a cross- sectional study, conducted during the period from October to December 2010 to measure and to assess the plasma lipid profile among Sudanese patients determine with thyroid disorders, and to weather the thyroid abnormalities .associated with cardiovascular disease The test group included two sub-groups, 40 patients with hyperthyroidism and 40 patients with hypothyroidism.40 apparently healthy subjects as a control group. All participants were selected from .Omdurman Military Hospital The two test sub groups were matched for age and gender with the control group. The diagnosis of the sub-groups (hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism) was done by consultant physicians in the military .hospital after being investigated for T3, T4 and TSH A fully reagents automated from chemistry Roche company analyzer were and used for measurement of total cholesterol , triglycerides, low .density and high density lipoproteins In comparison the means of lipid profile in hyperthyroidism patients group, the study shows moderate increase of total cholesterol ( mean 197± 48 mg/dl, P value 0.006) LDL ( mean 123± 37 mg/dl, P value 0.000),while triglycerides and HDL were not affected (mean 111± 42 mg/dl, p-value 0.97 . ,mean 47 ±16 p-value 0.89) respectively In hypothyroid patients there was significant increase in the serum total cholesterol ,triglycerides . and LDL concentrations without change in HDL It was obvious from this study that, elevated levels of thyroid hormones had a significant effect on plasma lipid associated profile. with Thyroid increased risk abnormalities of are cardiovascular diseases and diagnosis of these disorders might .influence cardiovascular morbidity and mortality en_US
