Abstract:
This is analytical, descriptive cross sectional study conducted in Shendi maternity
hospital during the period from June to July 2012 to determine hematological
parameters and reticulocyte count in diabetic and hypertensive pregnant women.
Three ml of venous blood sample was collected under sterile conditions in EDTA anti
coagulant, from seventy five pregnant women, of them twenty five pregnant with
diabetic as case group one, then the other twenty five pregnant with hypertension as
case group tow and lastly twenty five healthy pregnant women as acontrol group, the
hematological parameters were measured using semi automated hematological
analyzer machine (Sysmex KX 21N), and reticulocytes were counted microscopically
after staining. Data obtained were analyzed using soft ware program Statistical
Package of Social Science (SPSS version 11.5).
In diabetic pregnant women mean results shows: TWBCs (8.9 x 103), Hb (11.1 g/dl),
TRBCs (4.2 x 106), HCT (36.1%), MCV (84.9 fl), MCH (26.6 pg), MCHC (30.6 g/dl),
Platelets (221.3 x 103), Retics (1.7 %).
In hypertensive pregnant women mean results shows: TWBCs (8.2 x 10 3), Hb (10.9
g/dl), TRBCs (4.1 x 106), HCT (35.1%), MCV (83.6 fl), MCH (29.5 pg), MCHC (30.8
g/dl), Platelets (225.6 x 103), Retics (1.6 %).
In control pregnant women mean results shows: TWBCs (7.4 x 10 3), Hb (11.3 g/dl),
TRBCs (4.2 x 106), HCT (36.2%), MCV (84.1 fl), MCH (27.1/Pg) MCHC (31.6 g/dl),
Platelets (272.6 x 103), Retics (1.4 %).
Overall results shows TWBCs was significantly increased and platelet count was
significantly relatively decreased in diabetic pregnant women, while platelet count
significantly decreased in hypertensive pregnant women with P value < 0.05.
Significant decreased in Hb (p.value 0.02) , MCH ( p.value 0.01) and MCHC( p.value
0.04) was found in multigarvida.
Third and second trimester pregnant diabetic or hypertensive women with significant
decreased in HB and Hct were at high risk of anemia.
Significant increased in platelet count with significant decrease in MCHC with
elderly pregnant women whoever they were diabetic or hypertensive.
