The study was carried out to determine the impact of the personal
characteristics and technology characteristics on farmer adoption
of water harvest techniques on gardud land soils for food security
program North Kordofan- Sheikan Locality.
The main objective of this study was to measure the impact of
farmer personal charactaristics like age, level of education, level
of income .holding size, and technology characteristics like
relative advantage, sutiablity for use on adoption of water harvest
techniques such as using chisel plough, contour line or terraces.
Agronomic parctices (thinning – improved seeds – ete).
The study was implemented on randomly selected three villages
Primary data were secured from 67 respondents who were
randomly selected out of 670 farmers as target group on adoption
of water harvest techniques on gradud area.
The researcher used the social survey approach through personal
questionnaire designed for data collection. Data were analysed
using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS).
Descriptive analysis techniques were used and chi–square test
also was used at asignificance level of (0.05) to test the
hypotheses.
The study revealed that :
- 40.1% of the respondents were in the age group of 35-44 year.
- 55.2 % of the respondents were illiterate.
- 62.7 % of the respondents had an annual income of less than 1.8
million Sudanese pounds.
- 62.6 % of the respondents did not use contour lines or terraces
Chi - sqyare test for significance level showed that :
- There were significant realationship between the application of
chisel plough and level of education that means the level of
education had positive impact on adoption of application of chisel
plough.
- There were significant relationship between the building of
contour line and the level of income that means the level of
6
income had positive impact on adoption of building of contour
line.
- There were significant relationship between the tillage cost and
application of chisel plough that means the tillage cost had
negative impact on adoption of application of chisel plough.
- There were no significant relationship between the farmers
holding size and building contour line that means the farmers
holding size had no impact on adoption of building countour line.
- There were no singificant relationship between the age and
adoption of thinning practies that means the age had no impact on
adoption of thinning practies.
Finally the researcher recommends the following :-
1- The importance of accessibility of funds for the farmers for
plough operations and contour raising.
2- Releveant government institutions are advised to pay more
attention for this technology. The gradud soil reclamation
programme should be supported.
