-Background: Hemodialysis patients are at risk of developing trace elements imbalance.
-Design: descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in theRenal Center forKidney Dialysis, Khartoum state. -The aim of the present study was to assessment the copper and calcium levels among hemodialysis patients (before and after haemodialysis) with controls (age& sex &duration of dialysis). -A total of 40 individual with chronic renal failure were enrolled in this study, in addition to 20 healthy volunteers’ subjects as a control group. - Method: atomic absorption spectroscopy device was used for measurement of copper. spectrophotometeric assay was used calcium estimation, then data were analyzed by Statistical (SPSS version 16) computer software. -The results of the present study: showed a significant decrease in the mean of copper level in hemodialysis patients before and post dialysis (0.38±0.12), (0.36±0.11), (0.92±0.12) when compared with control group, respectively (P-value < 0.001). -Result of calcium indicated significant decrease when compared mean of hemodialysis patients before and post dialysis (8.6±1.2),(8.9±1.01), (9.5±0.6) when compared with control group, respectively (P-value <0.001). -In this study there was no correlation between copper and age & duration of dialysis respectively,( r = -0.016, p.value = 0.88) (r =0.003, p.value = 0.98).No difference in plasma copper mean when compare with gender (p.value = 0.39) . -Also there was no correlation between calcium and age & duration of dialysis respectively,(r = -0.115, p.value = 0.31) (r = 0.04,3 p.value =0.71).No difference in plasma calcium mean when compare with gender (p.value = 0.88). -In Conclusions: the Levels of copper and calcium are decreased in hemodialysis patients. -Recommendation:Copper and calcium should be given to patients
