| dc.description.abstract | This study was carried out in Khartoum state during the period from November 2008 – March 2009; to determine the frequency and antibiotics resistance of Klebsiella oxytoca isolated from patients suffering from community acquired urinary tract infection. Two hundred and ten urine specimens were collected from patients attended Khartoum Teaching Hospital and Fadil Center. The specimens were cultured on MacConkey's agar and Cystine Lactose Electrolyte Deficiency (CLED) agar for primary isolation of pathogen. The isolates were identified by colonial morphology, Gram’s stain, oxidase test, and biochemical tests using API E 20 system. The Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method was adopted to determine the resistance rate of the isolates to amoxicillin, amoxyclav, nitrofurantoin, nalidixic acid and co-trimoxazole. The result revealed that only 11 (5.2%) isolates of K. oxytoca were identified. The resistance rate of K. oxytoca was 11(100%) to amoxicillin, 5(45.5%) to amoxyclav and co-trimoxazole each, 2(18.2%) to nitofurantoin, 4(36.4%) to nalidixic acid. E-test was adopted to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of amoxyclav, nitrofurantoin and co-trimoxazole against these bacteria. The result indicated that the MIC, MIC50, MIC90 of amoxyclav were (0.05-10mcg/ml, 0.05mcg/ml, 10mcg/ml) respectively, nitrofurantoin (15-120mcg/ml, 15mcg/ml, 120mcg/ml) respectively and co- trimoxazole (0.5->240mcg/ml, 0.5mcg/ml, >240mcg/ml) respectively. The study concluded that the antimicrobial resistance of K. oxytoca to traditionally used antibiotics was slightly high and the frequency of K. oxytoca in the community-acquired urinary tract infection IV was slightly high too. | en_US |
