Abstract:
This study aimed at investigating the difficulties faced by EFL students in comprehending English hyponymy. The study adopted a descriptive analytical method. One instrument was used for data collections which was a test. The sample of the study consisted of 30 students from Sudan University of Science and Technology, Department of English Language, Second Year Students. The data was analyzed by using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) which provides percentage results for the test. The present study has come out with results that EFL students of English are not aware of compreFhending English hyponymy due to many causes such as insufficient specialized hyponymy materials for practicing hyponymy at universities, and they were not able to distinguish between hyponymy, co-hyponym and superordinate. At the end of the study, the researcher presented some recommendations focused on including hyponymy in English syllabus at universities and encouraging students for practicing in addition to raise students’ awareness of comprehending English hyponymy, with some suggestions that may help future students in this field.
