Abstract:
Recently, the applications of silver nanoparticle have intensively increased particularly in biological and medical fields. Most of methods that have been used to synthesis silver nanoparticles require high temperatures, vacuum conditions, and harsh/toxic chemicals. Therefore, most of researchers were turn to the eco-friendly and cost effective green synthesis method using various natural plants.
In this work, Basil leaves extract was used as the reducing agent to synthesize silver nanoparticles based onTurkevich method. During synthesis, the colour was changed after addition of Basil leave extract, indicating the formation of silver nanoparticles. UV-Vis spectrometer was further confirmed the formation of silver nanoparticles due to appearance of absorption peak in visible region owing to localized surface plasmon resonance. In addition, the effect of basil quantity and heating time on the formation of silver nanoparticles was also investigated. The obtained results showed that the heating time and the concentration of basil leaves extract had no obvious effect on the particle size but instead enhanced reaction rate. The particle size of silver was calculated using Mie theory and the average size was found to be ~5 nm
