Abstract:
Background:Low bone mass is a major health problem in postmenopausalwomen. The aim of this study to investigate the association between lipid profile and bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women in Khartoum, Sudan . Materials and Methods: This wasacross-sectional study, performed on 98 postmenopausal women from Khartoum-Sudan, between March 2019 to December2019. Bone mineral density was measured by Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(BMD in g/cm2).Serumtotal cholesterol, triglyceride and HDL-C levels were measured by enzymatic method usingspectrophotometer,LDL-C calculated using the Friedewald formula.Weight and height were measured byHY-RGZ160 160.Data were analyzed by using SPSS program version 16.
Results: According to DEXA result, 37.9 % of women were normalpenia, 47.9% were osteopenia and 11.2% were osteoporosis
According to BMD groups (normalpenia, osteopenia, osteoporosis ) there were insignificant change in means of serum total cholesterol (166.5 ± 31.4 mg/dL), (177.9 ± 45.3 mg/dL), (182.5 ± 46.3 mg/dL),serum triglyceride (134.2 ± 40 mg/dL), (120.8 ± 38.2 mg/dL), (110 ± 26.6 mg/dL), serum HDL-c( 58.1 ±16.5 mg/dL), (57 ± 12.8 mg/dL), (64±10.7 mg/dL), serum LDL-c (79.9 ± 30.3 mg/dL) (94.4 ± 40.9 mg/dL), (96.9 ± 48.1 mg/dL) p-value >0.05 respectively.
Conclusion:
The data of the study suggest thatSudanese postmenopausal women had normal lipid profile level. Meanwhile, no association observed between lipid profile and bone mineral density.
