Abstract:
This study aims to investigate and reveal the effect of using critical thinking methods and strategies as tools in teaching literature in the Sudanese secondary schools. Using critical thinking approach in teaching literary words can strengthen reading and writing skills and engage students in useful discussion and activities. The researcher used a mixed method to collect the date. Three tools were developed, teacher`s questionnaire, student`s pre and post questionnaire and student`s test. Also, an experiment was applied the prescribed literature text book (Treasure Island) was taught to two groups of students, an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group were taught using critical thinking approaches, while the control group were taught using the current method of teaching literature in Sudanese schools. The data collected was analyzed using SPSS. The main findings of the study were that using critical thinking as a tool in teaching literature leads to a positive impact on student`s knowledge and attitude towards studying literature. teacher`s knowledge of the appropriate strategies for teaching literature were very weak.
