This is a case control study carried out during period from September 2018 to April 2019, compared the plasma level homocysteine of 35 Sudanese patients with microcytic anemia as case group(15 males and 20 females) and 35 apparently healthy as control group (13 males and 22 females) (matched age and gender).
Participants in this study were from Omdurman Teaching Hospital in Khartoum State, Sudan. The plasma level of homocysteine were measured using DIRUI CS-T240 Auto-chemistry a nalyzer (full automation instrument). The results were analyzed using statistical package for social science (SPSS version 19) computer program.
This study measured plasma Homocysteine, Haemoglobin, Red Blood Cells count, Mean Cell Volume, Mean Cell Haemoglobin, Mean Cell Haemoglobin Concentration, Packed Cell Volume and Serum Iron in case and control group.
The study show that, there were significant decrease in mean of homocysteine, haemoglobin, Red blood cells count, mean cell volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin, packed cell volume and serum iron. While the mean of mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration was not changed in cases versus control Hcy(p-value<0.000),Hb(P-value<0.000),RBCs(P-value<0.000),MCV(P-value<0.000),MCH(P-value<0.001),PCV(P-value<0.000),S.iron(P-value<0.000), MCHC(P-value <0.195) respectively.
There was insignificant difference of plasma mean of Homocysteine, Haemoglobin, Red Blood Cells, Mean Cell Volume, Mean Cell Haemoglobin, Mean Cell Haemoglobin Concentration, Packed Cell Volume and Serum Iron between males and females of microcytic anemia patients group, Hcy(P-value<0.308),Hb(P-value<0.424),RBCs(P-value<0.687),MCV(P-value<0.514),MCH(P-value<0.816),MCHC(P-value<0.596),PCV(P-value <0.336),S.iron (P-value <0.728) respectively.
The study also showed, there was no correlation between plasma homcysteine level and Haemoglobin, Red Blood Cells, Mean Cell Volume, Mean Cell Haemoglobin, Mean Cell Haemoglobin Concentration, Packed Cell Volume, Serum Iron and age (P-value <0.896), (P-value <0.722), (P-value <0.939), (P-value <0.476), (P-value <0.128), (P-value < 0.389), (P-value <0.532), (P-value <0.500) respectively.
The result show significant decrease in homocysteine in microcytic anemia Patients.
There is no relation between homocysteine and red blood cells parameters, packed cell volume, serum iron and age. |
