Abstract:
Smartphones are increasingly becoming an ordinary part of our daily lives. With their remarkable capacity, applications used in these devices are extremely varied. In terms of language learning, the use of these applications has opened new windows of opportunity, innovatively shaping the way instructors teach and students learn. After accepting so many years English learning, only few university students AT Sudanese universities can use English properly in daily life. It is obvious that the current English standard is not efficient for university students. With the accelerated development of Apps about learning English and the popularization of mobile devices among university students, students have become increasingly interested in the learning benefits that apps on mobile devices bring. This study aimed to investigate the benefits of Using mobile learning apps Duolingo and lingQ) for Learning English as Foreign Language at Sudanese Universities.This study takes as one of its major objectives the detection of the learners’ attitude towards the inclusion of mobile phones apps in the teaching learning operation, namely in the field of language learning . Another much salient objective is to find out the degree of motivation teachers have in relation to incorporation of the new digital devices in creating a technological supported learning environment. The research design with pretest and posttest was employed to determine the differences between the scores of the control and the experimental group formed with convenience sampling. Results indicate that participants in the experimental group performed significantly better in the posttest, demonstrating the effectiveness of the mobile application used in this study on language learning. The study also provides recommendations towards the use of mobile applications in learning, syllabus designing and teachers training.
In summary, mobile apps have encouraged exciting opportunities for personalised and learner-centred environments with flexible access to learning materials anytime and anywhere. The novel and enjoyable ways of learning would have a great potential to increase learning motivation and encourage lifelong learning habits. More research will be needed in the fieled of mobile learning apps in order to suggest the right direction to effective language learning.
