Abstract:
This was cross sectional descriptive study done target in Faculty of Radiology at Sudan University of Science and Technology Khartoum State Sudan in the period from September 2015 to November 2015. The problem of study was that. The main objective study to estimate normal thyroid gland volume in Sudanese using ultrasound. The data was collected by data sheet specially designed for the study and includes 100 cases (54 female 46 male) with different ages. The study revealed that area normal thyroid gland volume was mean (5.425±2.484ml) the male was larger volume than female (15.120±0.900ml) respectively .the right lobe was larger the left lobe the measurement of each was (2.990±1.787ml) respectively . no correlation between age and volume .
The study conclude that ultrasound of 100 volunteers were examined in this study. In the process of gathering research data, we found that some cases have missing value. So we remove from the research group. And results remaining 100 valid samples.
The results show that, the mean total thyroid volume was 5.425 ± 2.484ml. Maximum volume was 15.120ml and minimum was 0.900ml. Right lobe volume was 2.990 ± 1.787ml while left lobe volume was 2.435 ± 1.076ml. Right lobe volume is significantly higher than the left lobe (p<0.0001). Maximum right lobe volume was 13.370ml and minimum right lobe volume was 0.160ml. Maximum left lobe volume was 7.030ml and minimum left lobe volume was 0.750ml.
Study recommended that scanning of thyroid gland should be done routinely to measure it is size because it is save, cheep and accurate.
