Abstract:
Background : Preeclampsia is one of the most common causes of maternal & fetal morbidity & mortality. The electrolytes were contribute significantly in the normal functioning of the vascular smooth muscles in pregnancy.
Objective: The present study was designed to assess the level of electrolytes in pregnant women with preeclampsia.
Materials and Method : This comparetive cross sectional case control hospital base study performed in Khartoum state at military Hospital department of Gyengology, the study included 100 partecipant;50 of them were pregnant women suffering from preclampsia In addition to 50 healthy pregnant women and age matched as control group . Blood sample was taken from all partecipants for preparation of plasma and the levels of plasma sodium and potassium was measured in each sample by Ion-selective electrodes (ISEs), the data obtain were analyzed using SPSS.
Result : The study showed significant increase in the sodium concentrations in preeclampsia pregnant women when compared with the control group (141.52 ± 3.24 mmol/l vs 137.82 ± 2.43 mmol/l) (p=0.01) and significant decrease in the potassium concentrations in preeclampsia patients when compared with the control group (3.56 ± 0.28 mmol/l vs 3.97 ± 0.34 mmol/l) (p=0.03). the present study showed no correlation between sodium and potassum(mmol/l) with age in group study(r=0.202, p=.161),(r=0.200, p=.164) respectivly.
Conclusion: pregnant wamen with preeclampsia had high plasma sodium and low plasma potassium.
