Abstract:
This study aims at investigating the difficulties facing Sudanese EFL learners in using and understanding English idioms, The Sample Jubal Awlia Locality Zoma and Zamor secondary school. The researcher adopted the descriptive analytical method. He used two tools for data collection students’ test and teachers’ questionnaire.The test was designed and given to 50 students from Zoma and Zamor secondary school,while the questionnaire was given to 25 secondary school teachers from different educational foundations .then the data was analyzed by using the statistical package of social science (SPSS). The analysis was showed that EFL learners in Zoma and Zamor secondary school students are weak in using and understanding English idioms.The data also pointed out that EFL teacher pay more attention in teaching vocabulary and grammar rather than English idioms , moreover, EFL textbooks exclude English idioms from their contents. Therefore, the researcher recommends that Textbooks designers of EFL should include English idiomatic expressions in the textbooks. While EFL teachers should focus on teaching English idioms and use them in front of their students.Whereas EFL students should attempt to practice idiomatic expressions while speaking English with each other and try to understand the meaning through the context rather than literal translation of individual words.
