Abstract:
This study was conducted in two phases. In phase one soil
samples were taken from three different locations, namely Juba, South
Sudan, El Hassahesa, Gezira state and Soba, Khartoum state during
October 2011. The purpose of this study was to detect if there are any
pesticides residues in the areas of study.
The study revealed that Deltamethrin was the only pesticide
detected in the three locations. Pendimethalin, a herbicide, was only
detected in El Hassahesa. The study also showed that none of the
known organochlorines such as DDT, Endosulfan and heptachlor were
detected.
In the other phase of the study a survey was conducted to evaluate
the awareness of the farmers about safe pesticides use. The study
revealed that Juba farmers were the least abiding by pesticides
recommended doses (66.7%), whereas El Hassahesa farmers were the
