Abstract:
This study is concerned with the way preeclampsia affects platelet indices (Platelet Count (PC), Mean Platelet Volume (MPV), Platelet Distribution Widths (PDW), Large Platelet Cell Ratio (L-PCR), Platelet Cell Volume (PCV) and Plateletcrit (PCT)). The study is also concerned with correlations between preeclampsia and patient age, number of deliveries, hypertension, other diseases, and medical history of patient and family.
This study is analytical case/control comparison. Normal pregnant women represented the control group (60 subjects). Preeclampsid women represented the case group. Both groups were randomly sampled in Omdurman Maternal Hospital (60 subjects). The blood samples were tested by sysmex xp 300, a fully automated device. Information on nominal variables of control and case groups was obtained by questionnaire.
All case platelet indices were significantly higher in the case group than those of the control group except PC and PCT which were higher in the control. PLCR differences were not significant.
The following control pairs correlated strongly: PC/Plateletcrit, PGW /MPV and Gravida/Parity. PC/PCT, PDW/PLCR, MPV/PLCR, Blood Pressure Systolic/Blood Pressure Diastolic, Age/gravida of case group also correlated strongly.
Most control and case women were present in the age group 18-28 year, had zero parity; had no abortion and were encountered in the pregnancy range of 25-38 week. Compared to control less case women had medically free patient or family history. Higher frequency (percent occurrence) of all disease and none disease risk factors, except hypersensitivity, thyroid and thrombosis, were recorded in families and patients of case than in those of control groups. A strong association was observed between preeclampsia on one side and previous preeclampsia in patient and in patient family on the other hand. Similar associa
tion were observed between preeclampsia and gravida, apportion, age, week of pregnancy and multiple pregnancies.
