Parathyroid Hormone and Calcium levels in Menopausal Women

Abstract

Menopause affect every woman as it is one of the most significant events in woman’s life and bring in a number of physiological changes that affect the life of woman permanently. This study conducted to measure parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcium levels in pre- and post-menopausal women and to detect the possible change. Ninety volunteer females from hospital in Khartoum/Sudan were enrolled. Divided into 2 groups, forty-five women as pre-menopause age (20-39 years) control group. The case group is post-menopause age (45-70years). The blood samples were collected to measure PTH level by ELISA and calcium level by colorimetric method. The results showed no statistical difference in level of PTH in postmenopause

compared to pre-menopause with mean SD (15.8 ) and (12.3 ) respectively with P value=0.053 . Also the results showed statistical difference in level of calcium in post-menopause compared to premenopause

results showed a significant negative correlation between PTH and calcium with age (r= and (r= respectively. While there was no correlation between PTH and calcium with body mass index and number of children.
