Abstract:
This study aims at identifying difficulties of writing productive skill in the structure of French sentence with respect to syntactic aspect by students of French as foreign language; female students of fourth year in French language department in Omdurman Islamic University (OIU) as case study. Likewise, it targets to difficulties that face students in composing compound sentence in French language.
For the purpose of this study, analytical-descriptive method was utilized, along with preparing a test for students of fourth year in (OIU). The test consisted of twenty-two compound sentences and divided into two sections; first section comprised of fifteen sentences, while second section nine sentences. The sample of study consisted of twenty female students.
A number of results were found out by the study; some of the most important ones were: most students have difficulties in composition of French compound sentence and using of conjunctions in correct slots as a result of their lack in knowledge of French compound sentence types, as well as lack of distinction between French compound sentences. These difficulties originated due to students' lack of knowledge about these particles and of their different functions.
Based on aforesaid results, the researcher made the following recommendations as follow:
- Increase duration of allocated hours for the study of French compound sentence because of its significance in text and in linguistics in general.
- Proposing more explanation and drills in all kinds of sentence and their functions to improve level of students in linguistics.
- Draw attention of student to focus on rule, and to use it in her conversation.
- Place emphasis on teaching French compound sentence through texts.
