Abstract:
Sudan is a fast growing-economy country. The fast increase in the income resulted in excessive increase in private cars causing severe traffic congestion almost everywhere in Khartoum state, due of lack of standards and references, lack of scientific bases applications in the process and analysis of traffic management , lack of traffic awareness of drivers and citizens which cause of severe congestion and low traffic network performance.
The objective of this research is studying the concepts of intelligent transportation system and traffic management in Khartoum state. Moreover, investigate the application of traffic management and intelligent transportation systems in the study area and review the possibility of access solutions to improve the capacity and level of service by using the micro modeling tools and intelligent transportation systems techniques, and investigate the public transportation system in Khartoum state in term of the existing situation and review the solution.
The research outcomes shows the possibility to improve the capacity and level of service by using traffic management micro-modeling tools and intelligent transportation system techniques and applying the standard of highway capacity manual ( HCM ) with calibration parameters to Khartoum state environment, also the application of Bus Rapid Transits BRT is essential to improve the public transportation for Khartoum state.
