Abstract:
The present study aims at the impact of English silent letters on learning pronunciation and spelling among the pupils in basic schools. The study highlights the importance of identifying silent letters so as to enhance the pupils’ performance in learning pronunciation and spelling of English language. The study adopts the descriptive and analytical method to collect and analyze data .Written and oral tests were used as tools for data collection and for the verification of the above hypotheses the data were analyzed statistically. Eventually the analysis of data has revealed that Students of basic school do face problems of identifying and pronouncing words which contain silent letters. Also it has been found that silent letters affect spelling to a great extent. The study has recommended that students should be aware of the importance of knowing silent letters so that they can write and pronounce English words correctly.
