Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to implement a change in the material of a 60 mm mortar rocket from grey cast iron to ductile cast iron. Grey cast iron was the typical material used in the manufacturing of the 60 mm mortar rocket but a few shortcomings led to the search for an alternative material. The research focused on three categories which are range of mortar when fired, number of fragments when it explodes and explosive material. Ductile cast iron was the selected alternative material sought an d was tested on the above three categories.
The resulting test concluded that ductile cast iron was a suitable alternative due to its increased fragmentation as well as using pure TNT instead of adding DNN produced favorable results but in case of range ductile cast iron did not produce a significant difference.
