Abstract:
This study investigates the use and understanding of polysemy which is linguistic
term in semantic area where meanings are studied. It has characteristic of multiple
meaning. Polysomic words can give different contextual meaning. This linguistic
feature encourages researcher to investigate this area to add this study to the
previous ones the study took place at secondary school in I Khartoum- karari
locality. The research uses descriptive and analytical method as for data collection
researcher uses a test which answered by fifty participants as a sample for the
study and outcome was of positive 40%students are unable to get correct answers
of question one and78%of them answered second question correctly. This result
matches hypothesis which confirms that most of students have difficulties in using
polysomic words but they can identify them in context lastly researcher
recommended that second language learners of English language do not need only
acquisition of words in isolation but in contexts and suggested for further studies in
this field because semantic is rich with new linguistic and educational phenomena
need to be studied for universal benefits.
