Abstract:
This research is entitled “Analysis of the difficulties of using direct and indirect object pronouns for the students of French as a foreign language at Omdurman Islamic University. The main objective of this study is to analyses the problems of using object pronouns in order to make simple and correct sentences in French language. It also aims at underlining the important role of object pronoun in avoiding repetition and build up a complete and successful text. We also shed the light on the role of syntax concerning the French sentence; we focus on considering the pronouns as it represents the main constituent of most sentences ´ structure.
To carry on this study, we used an analytical and descriptive method. In order to verify the main hypothesis of our research, we prepared a test for French third year students at Omdurman Islamic University and we analyzed this test according to specific three criteria: a) type of pronoun used, b) agreement of pronoun to verb conjugation.
The results we reach show that most students make in differentiating between direct and indirect object pronouns besides, they have difficulties in putting object pronouns in its right place within a sentence. This is justified by the student’s ´negligence concerning types of pronouns and differentiation between them. Wecan also say that the targeted students used to treat pronouns separately, isolated without taking in consideration text’s context. According to these results, we proposed some suggestions:
- Increasing hours devoted to learning direct and indirect object pronouns.
- Making more diversified exercise to improve students’ level in French grammar.
- Giving more importance to teaching French grammar through studying full and complete texts.
