Figurative Language in Thomas Hardy's Literary Works (Tess of the d’Urbervilles as Sample

Abstract

This study aimed at studding the novel of Thomas Hardy Tess of the d’Urbervilles in the realm of employing figurative language and the usage in the novel and what that added to literature. Thomas Hardy in this novel explained the relationship between the characters and their roles. Hardy used vivid language to reflect Tess’s beauty and the beauty of nature in country side through figurative language, also Hardy depicted suffering of Tess with both Alec d’Urbervilles her first lover and her Husband Angle Clare who travelled to Brazil and left her lonely confronting life difficulties. The novel is full of figure of speech which makes it an issue for the future studies. The first chapter contains an introductory presentation. The second chapter gives definition to figurative language represented in simile and metaphor with their examples, the third chapter composed of analysis and discussion of examples, whereas the fourth chapter contains the conclusion and finally the study gives some recommendations and suggestions for further studies.
