Abstract:
This study was designed to investigate the major flavonoids of two
medicinal plants: CordiasenensisandAcacia oerfotawhich are widely
used in Sudanesetraditional medicine.
The bark of Cordiasenensis was extracted with aqueous ethanol and
the crude product was screened for secondary metabolites.
Resultsshowed the presence of:flavonoids,tannins,alkaloids and
sterols. Test for saponins was negative.
The crude extracts of Cordiasenensisand Acacia oerofotawere
fractionated by different chromatographic techniques. After the usual
workup compound I was isolated from Cordiasenensis, while
compounds II and III were isolated from Acacia oerfota.

In cup plate diffusion bioassay, different concentrations of total
extract of Acacia oerofotaexhibited different antimicrobial
responses against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria,
with zones of inhibition ranging from 6 to 13mm.
In addition, the extractshowed good activity against B. subtilis,
P. aeruginosa and E. coli with zones of inhibition of 13, 13 and
12 mm, respectively with minimum inhibitory concentrations
(MIC) 62.5, 125 and 125 μg, respectively. However it showed
moderate inhibitory activity against the Gram positive bacterial
pathogen S. aureus with zone of inhibition 9 mm.
